What it can look like
How bipolar disorder tends to show up
Bipolar disorder is often treated as depression for years before anyone asks about the highs.
Up, fast and restless
You need little sleep, ideas race and big plans feel urgent. It can feel great until the costs arrive.
Down and heavy
Then come weeks of low energy, low mood and wanting to hide. Ordinary tasks take everything.
Picking up the pieces
Money spent, words said, commitments dropped. A lot of energy goes into repairing afterwards.

How the work goes
Therapy for bipolar disorder at our office in The Woodlands
Counseling here works alongside medication, not instead of it, focusing on routine, early warning signs and the relationships mood swings affect. With your permission, your counselor can coordinate with your prescriber.
Most of it draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
Counseling works alongside your prescriber
Most people with bipolar disorder also see a psychiatrist or other prescriber, and counseling fits alongside that care. Our counselors do not prescribe or manage medication.
If you do not have a prescriber yet, we will help you find one.

Questions about bipolar disorder therapy in The Woodlands
Can I start before a bipolar diagnosis?
Yes. Many people come in unsure whether their ups and downs are bipolar disorder, and counseling can begin while a prescriber assesses that.
Is it bipolar disorder or ADHD?
Both can bring restlessness, racing thoughts and impulsive choices. ADHD is steady, present most days since childhood, while bipolar disorder comes in episodes, with a clear change in sleep, energy and mood.
Some people have both. Telling them apart is part of the early sessions, and we also offer ADHD therapy in The Woodlands.
How is bipolar disorder different from mood swings?
Everyone has ups and downs. Bipolar disorder involves distinct episodes lasting days or weeks, with changes in sleep, energy and behavior that others notice.
Moods that shift within hours, often after something between people, point elsewhere, and your counselor will help sort that out.
What if I am in an episode right now?
Contact your prescriber first, because weekly counseling is not built for a high or a deep low in progress. If you are in danger, call or text 988, or call 911.
Can family members be part of the work?
It can help when the people close to you know the early signs too. Some counselors at this office also see families, so a joint session is possible.
Tell us on the form if you would like that.
What is a first session like?
It starts with one short form, in your own words. We read it, match you with a counselor, and tell you the estimated cost before you book.
From there you can start with a free consultation or go straight to a first session with your counselor. Sessions are weekly and one to one, in person at our Sawdust Road office or by secure video from anywhere in Texas.
Bring what you know about your past episodes and your prescriber’s details, so counseling can fit around your care.
What if the first counselor is not the right fit?
Tell us. Fit matters more than almost anything else in whether counseling helps, so we do not treat it as a complaint.
Under the Reset, your first session with a new counselor is free. The Reset is about fit only, not a promise about results.
