For my first time ever going to therapy my experience with this place ,I actually cannot put into words how wonderful it was. AJ your attention to detail and ability to connect ideas and solutions together is quite very remarkable, with all the challenges I have had in my life I have never had someone be able to piece something so complex together so fast. The changes mentally that have been made so far is translating to mind and body wellness as well for me, thank you . During my session with Brenda last year she was very genuine and kind along with providing empathy and insight while blending attentive listening and the space was very organized, calm and structured well. The office is very welcoming and clean and the therapists are so understanding and very professional , I would highly recommend.

What Can Contribute to OCD Symptoms?

There isn’t one single cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Research suggests that OCD develops through a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental factors, while stress and life changes can make symptoms more noticeable.

Common factors include:

  • Family history or genetics that may increase susceptibility to OCD

  • Differences in brain function related to fear, uncertainty, and habit formation

  • Major life stress or significant transitions that can intensify symptoms

  • Traumatic or highly stressful experiences that may worsen existing OCD

  • Perfectionism or an intolerance of uncertainty, which can reinforce the OCD cycle

Whatever may be contributing to your OCD, effective treatment focuses on changing the cycle—not assigning blame. Through evidence-based OCD counseling, we’ll help you reduce compulsions, tolerate uncertainty, and regain confidence in everyday life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is considered the gold-standard psychological treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Many people also benefit from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) alongside ERP. At Acceptance Path Counseling, we use evidence-based OCD counseling to help you face intrusive thoughts without relying on compulsions, so you can build confidence, reduce anxiety, and regain control of your daily life.

Yes. While therapy may not eliminate intrusive thoughts completely, it can change how you respond to them. Through OCD counseling, you'll learn to recognize obsessive thoughts, resist compulsive behaviors, and tolerate uncertainty without becoming trapped in the OCD cycle. Over time, many people find their anxiety decreases and compulsions become less frequent and less disruptive.

OCD is often misunderstood, and well-meaning reassurance or general talk therapy can unintentionally reinforce symptoms. A therapist experienced in OCD treatment understands how obsessions and compulsions work and can guide you through proven approaches like ERP and ACT. Specialized treatment provides a structured, personalized plan designed to support lasting recovery.

OCD counseling begins with understanding how your symptoms affect your daily life, relationships, work, and overall well-being. Together, we'll create a treatment plan tailored to your goals, gradually helping you face fears, reduce compulsions, and develop healthier ways to respond to uncertainty. Throughout the process, you'll build practical skills that support long-term resilience and greater freedom from OCD.
