How the work goes

What a session is actually like

Early sessions are mostly you talking and your counselor listening for the pattern underneath. Then it gets practical: one small thing to notice or try before next week.

Most of the time that draws on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Not always, and never as a script: when something else fits you better, your counselor uses it and says why.

Counseling does not promise a different life, and neither do we. It is a steady place to practice until more of your week is yours.

Before you book

What you’re probably wondering

Do you prescribe medication or offer psychiatry?

No. Acceptance Path Counseling is a counseling practice, and none of our counselors prescribe.

If you already see a prescriber, counseling runs alongside that and we can coordinate with your permission. If you need one, we will say so plainly and point you elsewhere.

If you were looking for a psychiatry practice with a similar name, that is a different business, not us.

Is a counselor the same as a therapist?

Here, yes. Our counselors are licensed in Texas as LPCs and LCSWs, which is the licensing most people mean when they search for a therapist.

We say counselor because it is our word for what we do. The work is the same either way.

What if the first counselor is not the right fit?

Tell us. Fit matters more than almost anything else in whether counseling helps, so we do not treat it as a complaint.

Under the Reset we waive the fee for your last session and cover your next one, until you find the counselor who fits. The Reset is about fit only, not a promise about results.

Which insurance plans can I use, and do you take Medicaid?

The twelve plans listed under Cost, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna, and we confirm your benefits before the first session. Original Medicare and UHC Medicare Advantage are on that list too.

Medicaid is not, and we cannot bill it. If that is your coverage, we will help you find someone who can.

Can I ask for a male or female therapist, or one who shares my background?

Yes, put it on the form. For gender, background, age or anything else, we will tell you honestly whether someone here fits.

If not, we will say whether another office or a video counselor would suit you better.

Do you see teenagers?

Some of our counselors here work with teenagers. Put the age on the form and we will match you with one of them.

If the fit is not here, we will point you to a therapist who does that work.

Do you see couples or families?

Some of our counselors work with couples and families, and others see individuals only.

Tell us on the form what you are looking for and we will match you with someone who does that work.

How soon can I start, and can I come in the evening?

New clients are usually seen within about a week of the form, depending on who has room. Our last appointments start at 5pm on weekdays; if you need later, tell us and we will say what is possible before you book.

Do I have to come to the office?

No. Any Willowbrook counselor can see you by secure video from anywhere in Texas.

You can also mix the two, in person most weeks and video on the week the drive is the hard part.

Is what I am dealing with serious enough for counseling?

If it is costing you sleep, evenings, patience with people you love, or the ability to start things, it is enough. You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to come in.

Naming it is part of the work, not the entry fee.

Start with what this week has been like

One short form, in your own words. We read it, match you with a counselor, and tell you the cost before you book.

Acceptance Path Counseling provides weekly counseling from licensed Texas counselors, in person at our Houston-Willowbrook office and by secure video across Texas. We are not a psychiatry practice and do not prescribe medication.

We do not offer group therapy, psychological testing, or intensive or inpatient programs, and will help you find them if you need them. Counseling is not an emergency service.
