UNDERSTANDING TRAUMA

How Trauma Can
Continue to Show Up

01

Feeling On Edge — Even When You’re Safe

Your surroundings may be calm, yet your body can still feel ready for something to go wrong. You may startle easily, stay alert, or find it difficult to fully relax.

Hypervigilance Startle Response
02

Feeling Distant From Yourself — When Connection Feels Difficult

Trauma can sometimes leave you feeling emotionally numb, disconnected from relationships, or less engaged with things that once mattered. You may feel physically present while emotionally somewhere else.

Emotional Numbness Detachment
03

Getting Pulled Back Into the Past — When Triggers Bring Old Feelings Forward

A place, conversation, sensation, or unexpected reminder can bring difficult emotions rushing back. Even when you know you’re safe now, the reaction can feel immediate and overwhelming.

Triggers Intrusive Memories

Finding Your Way Forward

Trauma can affect how you relate to others, handle everyday situations, and move through life long after an experience has passed. If any of these feel familiar, support can help.

Avoiding What Feels Overwhelming

You may avoid certain places, conversations, people, or situations because they bring up difficult emotions or memories. Over time, avoidance can make everyday life feel smaller.

Relationships Feel Harder

Trusting others, opening up, or feeling emotionally present can become difficult after trauma. Even close relationships may feel harder to navigate than they once did.

Always Managing, Rarely Resting

So much energy can go toward staying alert, managing stress, or getting through the day that there's little left for work, relationships, or the things you enjoy.

Ready for Life to Feel Different

You may be tired of organizing your life around what happened. Therapy can give you space to understand those patterns, develop new ways of responding, and move toward a life that feels more like your own.

Trauma can make everyday life feel harder than it should, but you don’t have to keep carrying it alone. Our Houston Willowbrook team serves Champion Forest and nearby communities with thoughtful, trauma-focused support to help you feel more grounded, connected, and ready for what comes next.

For my first time ever going to therapy my experience with this place ,I actually cannot put into words how wonderful it was. AJ your attention to detail and ability to connect ideas and solutions together is quite very remarkable, with all the challenges I have had in my life I have never had someone be able to piece something so complex together so fast. The changes mentally that have been made so far is translating to mind and body wellness as well for me, thank you . During my session with Brenda last year she was very genuine and kind along with providing empathy and insight while blending attentive listening and the space was very organized, calm and structured well. The office is very welcoming and clean and the therapists are so understanding and very professional , I would highly recommend.
